Neck lifting
Neck lifting can be performed for different reasons involving different procedures including:

Liposuction: removing fat of the region,
Cervicoplasty: removing excess skin,
Platysmaplasty: removing or tightening neck muscles.
The neck lifting procedure can also be the combination of these and an additional surgery of forehead lift, facelift or eyelid surgery.
The surgery
LIPOSUCTION is usually done in 60 minutes. However, if this surgery is performed with other procedures, it might take several hours. In this case this procedure is performed first. An incision is made below the chin to remove excess fat by inserting a small cannula (a hollow tube) beneath the skin and into the fatty tissue. The surgeon uses the cannula to break up the fat and remove it from the neck area.
If the surgery requires CERVICOPLASTY, the removal of excess skin on the neck, an incision is made under the chin and behind the ears. The surgeon cuts back and lifts the skin which is secured with permanent sutures. Finally a bandage and tape is applied to the incision to reduce swelling and discomfort.
PLATYSMAPLASTY is recommended if you have loose or weakened neck muscles. The surgeon makes an incision under the chin and/or behind the ears. Then the surgeon inserts a tiny instrument to either remove a portion of specific neck muscles (platysma) or realign them to tighten the middle area of the neck. The surgeon may use permanent sutures on the muscles to hold them in the best position. A bandage and tape is applied to reduce swelling and discomfort.
After surgery
After these types of surgery a bandage is applied to reduce swelling and discomfort. You can expect bruising and swelling around your neck, jaw and ears for up to 10 days. Oral painkillers and antibiotics may be given to reduce pain and the risk of infection. Sutures are removed in about two weeks. The results gradually become obvious as the body heals with time and the final result becomes evident in about three to six months.
Complications and risks
The main risks include those that accompany most surgical procedures: infection, scarring, numbness, itching, anesthesia risk.
Numbness of the skin often occurs for a few weeks after neck-lift surgery. In rare instances this condition can be permanent. Damaging the nerves and muscles of the face and neck area is another risk of this kind of surgery. It might result in the inability to move certain muscles of the face and neck.
You can avoid most complications by choosing the right cosmetic surgeon and following pre- and postoperative instructions.
